Portrait of one of the boys hanging out around the Ducor Hotel.
Back in the days, the Ducor Palace Hotel was the place to go in West Africa. Being one of the few five-star hotels in all of Africa it boosted three hundred rooms, tennis courts, a pool and an excellent French restaurant. The hotel was closed in 1989 just before the coup led by Charles Taylor. The coup ousted President Samuel Doe and marked the beginning of many years of civil war and violence. During those years the hotel “dropped” the smartly dressed, gold-clad visitors and became home to the many displaced by the fighting in the country who sought refuge in the capital.
In 2007, the Liberian Ministry of Justice started evicting the hotel’s residents and reportedly investment from Libya has been secured for a full renovation. The hotel’s guards were telling me that the reconstruction should start this year.

I love sitting in a train. Sure, you can listen to music everywhere but in a train … I don’t know. The way the nature passes and the thoughts begin to flow without even knowing it … it’s something really special. And I love the feeling. Sometimes I think there’s nothing better than sitting in a train and doing nothing but listen to some really good music that breaks your heart.
